When styling our homes, choosing the right window treatment can be a real dilemma. With so many fantastic products available, it's easy to feel overwhelmed, especially when you consider the potential cost depending on the number of windows and the type of treatment you select.
To help you make an informed decision, here are some key factors to consider when choosing the perfect window dressing solution for your home:
1. Privacy: Do you need to fully or partially block the view into your home? Consider if your windows face a busy walkway, a public square, a busy road, or a bus stop. While it might not always be exciting, ensuring your home is comfortable and secure is paramount.
2. Direction: Are your windows south or north-facing? Even if privacy isn't a concern, some window treatments become necessary if the light disrupts your daily routine. For example, it would be almost impossible to watch afternoon TV if your set is directly across from a southwest-facing window without a blind or curtain to draw.
3. Accessibility: Unfortunately, not all properties have the right specifications for every desired window treatment. For instance, you won't be able to install a Roman blind within a window recess if the recess isn't deep enough or if the windows open inwards.
4. Practicality: Common sense plays a big role in selecting the right window dressing. While it might seem obvious, certain things must be taken into account when planning. Think about using water-resistant fabrics for wet rooms and bathrooms, or blackout fabrics for children's bedrooms.
5. Aesthetics: It might feel like this should be the first consideration, but once you've addressed the more practical stages of decision-making, you can then focus on the enjoyable aspects: colour, texture, and finishes.
